Calcium Metal
CA-50G
Generic
Calcium Metal (Ca) is a reactive alkaline earth metal belonging to Group 2 of the periodic table.
Scientifically, it readily loses two electrons to form Ca²⁺ ions, making it a strong reducing agent. It reacts with water to produce calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) and hydrogen gas, and with oxygen to form calcium oxide (CaO). Because of its high reactivity, it is usually stored under oil to prevent contact with air and moisture.
In application, calcium metal is used in metallurgy (as a reducing agent to extract or purify other metals), in the production of alloys, and in chemical synthesis. Biologically, calcium ions (not the metal form) are essential for bone formation, muscle contraction, and nerve function, but the pure metal itself is not used medically due to its reactivity and potential to cause burns.
