Acetone (Propanone)

Acetone (Propanone, C₃H₆O) is a small, highly volatile organic solvent belonging to the ketone family.

Scientifically, its carbonyl group (C=O) makes it polar yet able to dissolve many non-polar substances, allowing it to break down oils, fats, and resins efficiently. It evaporates rapidly due to weak intermolecular forces, which is why it leaves little residue.

In practice, it is widely used as a solvent in laboratories, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics (e.g., nail polish remover). Biologically, small amounts are naturally produced in the body during fat metabolism (ketosis), but high levels can be harmful, especially in conditions like diabetes.
