Ammonium Nitrate

Ammonium Nitrate (NH₄NO₃) is an inorganic salt composed of ammonium (NH₄⁺) and nitrate (NO₃⁻) ions, known for its high nitrogen content.

Scientifically, it is a strong oxidizing agent, meaning it can supply oxygen to support combustion. When heated, it decomposes to produce gases such as nitrous oxide (N₂O) and water vapor, and under certain conditions (e.g., confinement or contamination), this decomposition can become rapid and explosive.

In application, it is widely used in fertilizers to promote plant growth and in controlled industrial settings for explosives (e.g., ANFO). While not highly toxic itself, it poses significant hazard risks due to its potential for thermal decomposition and explosion, requiring careful storage away from heat, fuels, and contaminants.
