Ammonia Solution

Ammonia Solution (Aqueous Ammonia, NH₃·H₂O) is a solution of ammonia gas dissolved in water, forming a weak alkaline (basic) solution.

Scientifically, ammonia reacts with water to produce ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) and hydroxide ions (OH⁻). The hydroxide ions are responsible for its basicity, allowing it to neutralize acids and disrupt biological molecules such as proteins and lipids in microorganisms.

In practice, it is used as a cleaning and disinfecting agent, in fertilizer production, and in some pharmaceutical preparations (e.g., smelling salts). However, due to its irritant and corrosive nature, exposure can damage the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, so it must be handled with proper dilution and ventilation.
